One of the best examples of democracy blended with capitalism is the collection of enterprises in the Mondragon Cooperative, from the Basque region of Spain.
The Cooperative dates back to 1956 and includes banks, educational institutions, factories and a major supermarket chain, but it’s little known. Calvert co-founder Terry Mollner visited the Cooperative in 1979 and recently wrote a great description of it, calling it a herald of the coming Relationship Age — a term I very much like.
With Terry, let’s discuss:
- How is Mondragon different from other industrial organizations? What processes stand out?
- How are its outcomes different? What can corporations learn from Mondragon?
- What is the Relationship Age?
- What are the prospects for cooperatives worldwide?
